The seasons have changed in the
Hocking Hills. The crumpled, brown remnants of the last
of the autumn leaves may still be clinging to a few
brave branches, but the scent of snow is already in the
air. Snow. It may bring to mind the slippery slide of
tires on the highway and the worry that we'll lose a day
of work to cancelled schools. But it also stirs up
memories of gray Sunday afternoons turned sunny with
another sled ride down the hill, a cup of hot chocolate
with a melting marshmallow on top held tightly between
chilled hands and basking safely in the warm glow of a
fireplace while the snow pings off the glass of windows.
Winters in the Hocking Hills are
less like the slippery, sliding-sideways tire
rides on our commute to work and more like the
soothing hot cup of cocoa after a fun day of sledding.
We're a winterized version of summer with lots of
outdoor adventures to discover and just as many ways to
relax. And just about any time during the colder months
of the year is a good time for a sip of something warm
and relaxing here in southern Ohio. . . and a
good time to take a break from the nerve-racking car
drives of life.
So just how can you winterize your sense of adventure in
the Hocking Hills? Here are just a few ideas!
Go
Sledding
Lake Logan State Park
dam (near Hocking Hills State Park)
Sledders can use the dam at Lake
Logan and there is plenty of parking at the dam parking
lot right off of State Route 664.
How to get to Lake Logan:
From Columbus/Lancaster and Logan:
To get to Lake Logan, folks can
take State Route 33 East from Columbus to the Logan
Bremen Exit which is State Route 664. Turn right. The
Lake Logan Dam parking lot is about 1/4
mile down on the right.
Lake Hope State Park
dam
Sledders can use the dam which is
located right off State Route 278.
How to get to Lake Hope:
From Columbus/Lancaster and Logan:
Take 270 to Route 33
South through Lancaster and down to Nelsonville and
State Route 278. Take 278 South to Lake Hope State
Park. (1.5 hours)
From Athens:
Take Route 50 West to
Prattsville. Turn right on State Route 278, head north
through Zaleski and on to Lake Hope State Park. (30
minutes)
Look for Frozen
Waterfalls!
The park is open all year long
so you can hike from dawn to dusk 365 days a year in the
Hocking Hills.
If you like the waterfalls at
Ash Cave, Old Man's Cave and Cedar Falls in summer,
you'll love to see them frozen to a blue glaze in
winter.
Ash Cave:
Length:
There is an upper and lower trail at Ash Cave, each one
approximately a 1/2 mile long. The lower trail is
handicap accessible along a paved sidewalk ending in the
large sandy region of the recess cave. It takes
approximately a 1/2 hour to hike the trail.
Directions:
From Logan
Take State
Route 93 south to State Route 56
Cedar Falls:
Length:
The trail is about a 1/2 mile and takes about 40 minutes
to hike.
