Spring.
It can never seem to come quickly enough even after the
mildest of winters. This year is no exception. In the
Hocking Hills, we managed to get a few thick layers of
white on the ground this late winter and the frigid
winds of February and early March haven’t stopped
howling quite yet. But with each passing day and each
step of hiking boot into muddy, snowy trails, we’re one
step closer to warmer air. So . . . get ready to kick
off your cold winter snow boots and dig your thinner
hikers out of the closet. Spring! It’s coming soon!
Spring Things to Watch For:
Raptor
Courtship Displays: Watch the skies for the local
Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks swooping and diving
to impress the females. At night, listen for the “Who-Cooks-For-You”
call of the Barred Owl calling for its mate and
protecting its territory.
Baby Animals: Keep safe distances once
spring progresses and the young opossums, raccoons and
fawns begin to explore their new world. Please remember
not to touch any wild animal especially the babies.
Although they may appear to be alone, their mothers are
never far away and will
return as soon as you leave! “A common mistake is taking
a baby animal found alone in the park,” says Naturalist
Pat Quackenbush from Hocking Hills State Park. “Baby
animals are often left alone even for long expanses of
time while the parents gather food for themselves or the
young. Baby animals by themselves are not abandoned and
are better cared for by their parents than their
so-called human heroes.”

WOODCOCK
WATCH
Is this just another “snipe hunt”? No. What is an
American Woodcock and why would I want to watch one?
Well…this bird has one of the most elaborate courtship
rituals of many of Ohio’s avian friends and one of the
most intriguing to observe. Bring along a pair of
binoculars and meet the naturalist in the Conkle’s
Hollow parking lot to find out. (Unfortunately, this
bird is weather-dependent so
keep your fingers crossed for clear skies.)

the long time birder, the beginner or just the family
that loves to hike together. Although the program is set
up for certification after 3 weeks, you may attend any
individual week. There is no cost but pre-registration
is preferred by calling (740) 385-8003 ext.213.
